Water towers

1963-1979

BERND E HILLA BECHER

This series of photographs allows us to examine different architectural variations of a single theme, that of water towers. The selection of a specific typology, which in a post-industrial age tends to repeat itself endlessly, explores the potential of the photographic medium in conferring monumentality to the individual structure.

Description

The Bechers always limited themselves to systematically and neutrally recording this kind of ruined architecture, without coloristic connotation and with fairly uniform light-shadow conditions. Compared to the Gasometers also in the Valsecchi collection, which are chronologically earlier, this work has a greater visual impact because of the size and arrangement of the photographs in separate frames. The photographic series was first exhibited in Massimo Valsecchi’s gallery in Milan on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to the Bechers held in May 1977: in that show, the work occupied the entire back wall.
